EU Ecolabel toolbox, A user-friendly professional training package for hotel owners and managers and their operational staff, aiming to help them to audit for the EU Ecolabel, to apply to competent bodies, and to successfully obtain the label.
EU Ecolabel toolbox was developed as part of the European project ShMILE 2 financed by the European programme ENPI.
This project brings together 12 partners from 6 different countries (Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Jordan and Tunisia).
ADEME, one of the French project partners, has supported the development of this toolkit.
EU Ecolabel toolbox was created because tourism is an economic sector of primary importance as the number of jobs it generates (200 million jobs), the share of GDP that is account for (9% worldwide, 4% in Europe and 6 5% in France) and the number of affected passengers (more than 920 millon).
Tourist accommodation is 2% of 5% of CO2 emissions generated by the tourism sector.
Finally, the Mediterranean is a region that focuses alone more than a third of international tourism and a quarter of global hosting capabilities, mainly located in the north-west of the basin. Today, the tourism development is shifting to the South and to the East.
Essential axis of economic development in many Mediterranean countries, tourism represents for them a vital economic issue as evidenced by some observatories (in 2025, the national and international tourists could reach 637 million, according to the Blue Plan) .
Protecting the environment is a necessity if we want to ensure the future of tourism in the Mediterranean and worldwide.
Support the tourism sector to reduce its environmental impact and its consumption of natural resources is a crucial issue for our world today and for the competitiveness of companies.
EU Ecolabel toolbox is designed for hoteliers and their staff to support them in their environmental efforts, from the audit until the EU Ecolabel through communication and awareness of their employees and partners.
It also offers best practices and solutions to meet the requirements of the EU Ecolabel.
